Purchased by YAQIAO LI ([emailprotected] com) on October 15, 2012 711-024 Brazil: Leading the BRICs? Brazil in the World Economy Colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Brazil initially exported lumber and gold (Exhibit 1). Additional exports came from sugar, tobacco, and eventually coffee farmed on large plantations using indigenous peoples and slaves brought from Africa. 2 After Napoleonââ¬â¢s troops invaded Portugal in 1807, crown prince Joao VI escaped to Rio de Janeiro with his court. In 1822, one year after Joao VI returned to Europe, his son Pedro I declared Brazil an independent country. Brazil then established trade relations with northern Europe, the United States, and Latin America even as its economy remained largely based on exporting commodities. A republican government was established after a relatively peaceful rebellion in 1889. Its leaders went on to create a cartel controlling international coffee supplies. Profits from exports, however, were concentrated in the hands of elite landowners. Even after the abolition of slavery in 1888, black, indigenous, and mixed-race migrants from the north suffered from a lack of opportunities and access to land and ended up settling in slums calle d favelas, most notoriously in Rio de Janeiro. In 1930, a former republican official, Getulio Vargas, overthrew the regime and by 1937 gave himself dictatorial powers. He then put in place an import substituting industrialization (ISI) development strategy, with high tariffs to protect domestic producers and exchange rate controls to keep the currency stable. Vargas and his successors established a significant role for the state in the Brazilian economy. State-owned enterprises expanded, notably into oil (Petrobras) and mining (Vale), and Vargas created a national development bank to provide subsidized loans for long-term infrastructure projects. However, restrictive labor-market policies made it costly for firms to hire or fire workers, and new businesses often operated outside the formal economy. Despite proindustrialization policies, Brazil remained dependent on agricultural exports. When international coffee prices dropped in the early 1950s, the country experienced a significant balance-of-payments crisis. The ensuing stabilization program, passed under International Monetary Fund (IMF) pressure, undermined support for Vargas, who took his own life in a climate of political unrest. Juscelino Kubitschek, elected in 1955, continued policies of state-run industrialization, with extensive government spending on infrastructure, including building the new capital, Brasilia. Aggressive growth fueled import consumption and worsened Brazilââ¬â¢s balance-of-payments, while government debt ballooned. Inflation jumped from 25% in 1960 to more than 100% in 1964. 4 In 1964, a military coup supported by right-wing groups continued Brazilââ¬â¢s ISI growth strategy but opened the country to foreign direct investment and introduced radical measures to control inflation. Reforms mandated domestic savings, liberalized financial markets, and provided subsidized loans to domestic industries. The reforms were later called the ââ¬Å"Brazilian miracleâ⬠because an expansion in manufacturing and services generated GDP growth averaging more than 10% annually. However, the military government also eliminated political parties and kidnapped and tortured political dissidents. For example, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva (Lula), who later became a leader in the Partido dos Trabalhadores (Workersââ¬â¢ Party) and eventually president, was incarcerated for protesting the military regime.

Smoking and Nice Warm Cigarette free essay sample
I have brought you here today to discuss a basic human right that has been suppressed. A right that we once had, but that has been extinguished by the pessimists. By those who put their faith in numbers and facts and realities, and who have no respect for human addiction when it conflicts with health standards. Our constitutional right has been violated. Our freedom revoked. We cannot smoke cigarettes in public. There was a time ââ¬â a wonderful time ââ¬â when I could enter a restaurant and be offered both smoking and non-smoking sections. While I did not approve of the discriminatory segregation, I allowed it to go on. Now I wonder if I had taken a stand, way back when, maybe I could have prevented the oppression. But now, now Iââ¬â¢ve been stripped of my right completely. Is it so wrong to want not a bowl of breadsticks before my meal, but a nice warm cigarette? Is it so wrong to refuse that fattening chocolate cake, replacing it with a much lower-calorie cigarette? I think not. We will write a custom essay sample on Smoking and Nice Warm Cigarette or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page There was a time when while I could sit in my car, waiting to pick my son up from his elementary school, and I could take a quick drag from a cigarette and no one would look twice. But now I cannot even bring one onto the campus, let alone light one. Is this not a violation of my rights? Why, when I am in my own car, can I not do as I please? While I do admit that it is necessary for me to roll the windows down, thereby releasing the byproduct of my only source of happiness into the lungs of young children, I must simply say that I do not believe that second-hand smoke really is toxic, even if every single scientist in the entire world says otherwise. There was a time when I could smoke a cigarette when the preacherââ¬â¢s sermon went on for too long, or he discussed a sin I myself had committed, thus putting me on edge. I could relieve myself of the stresses of the lord and have not a problem with those around me but occasional annoyed and rarely angry glare. Now I am fairly certain that if I even lifted a cigarette more than an inch or two out of my pack my mates would all but jump on me, creating a much larger distraction than the smoking would have been in the first place. I know how stressful public speaking can be; I would have no problem with the preacher smoking during his sermon, but for some unfathomable reason our society has deemed this type of behavior unacceptable. I propose the smoking ban be lifted! I propose that smoking be permitted, nay, encouraged! That the carcinogens be allowed to permeate our air! Let the tar, benzene, formaldehyde, ammonia, acetone, carbon monoxide, nicotine, arsenic, vinyl chloride, beryllium, cadmium, ethylene oxide, toluene and hydrogen cyanide swirl freely through our vast atmosphere. Let the children breathe it! Only 440,000 people die prematurely each and every year in the United States of smoking-related causes. So I know that smoking is the leading cause of premature, preventable death in this country, but honestly, I donââ¬â¢t see the problem.

Definition and Examples of Verbless Sentences
Definition and Examples of Verbless Sentences Definition In English grammar, a verbless sentence is a construction that lacks a verb but functions as a sentence. Also known as aà broken sentence. A verbless sentence is a common type of minor sentence. In rhetoric, this construction is called scesis onomaton. See Examples and Observations below. A welter of foul-smelling feathers and coyote-scattered carrion which was all that remained of somebodys dream of a chicken ranch.(Wallace Stegner, Wolf Willow, 1962)A white hat. A white embroidered parasol. Black shoes with buckles glistening like the dust in the blacksmiths shop. A silver mesh bag. A silver calling-card case on a little chain. Another bag of silver mesh, gathered to a tight, round neck of strips of silver that will open out, like the hatrack in th e front hall. A silver-framed photograph, quickly turned over. In fact, it had better might seem excessively formal in such an exchange.(E. D. Johnson, The Handbook of Good English. Simon Schuster, 1991)Fowler on the Verbless SentenceA grammarian might say that a verbless sentence was a contradiction in terms; but, for the purpose of this article, the definition of a sentence is that which the OED calls in popular use often, such a portion of a composition or utterance as extends from one full stop to another. The verbless sentence is a device for enlivening the w ritten word by approximating it to the spoken. There is nothing new about it. Tacitus, for one, was much given to it. What is new is its vogue with English journalists and other writers . . ..Since the verbless sentence is freely employed by some good writers (as well as extravagantly by many less good ones) it must be classed as modern English usage. That grammarians might deny it the right to be called a sentence has nothing to do with its merits. It must be judged by its success in affecting the reader in the way the writer intended. Used sparingly and with discrimination, the device can no doubt be an effective medium of emphasis, intimacy, and rhetoric.(H.W. Fowler and Ernest Gowers, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage, 2nd ed. Oxford University Press, 1965) Henry Peacham on Scesis OnomatonHenry Peacham [1546-1634] both defined and exemplified scesis onomaton: When a sentence or saying doth consiste altogether of nouns, yet when to every substantive an adjective is joined, thus: A man faithful in friendship, prudent in counsels, virtuous in conversation, gentle in communication, learned in all learned sciences, eloquent in utterance, comely in gesture, pitiful to the poor, an enemy to naughtiness, a lover of all virtue and goodliness (The Garden of Eloquence). As Peachams example demonstrates, scesis onomaton can string together phrases to form an accumulatio . . ..(Arthur Quinn and Lyon Rathburn, Scesis Onomaton. Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition, ed. by Theresa Enos. Routledge, 2013)Scesis Onomaton in George Herberts Sonnet PrayerPrayer the churchs banquet, angels age,Gods breath in man returning to his birth,The soul in paraphrase, heart in pilgrimage,The Christian plummet sounding heavn and earthEngine against th Almighty, sin ners towr,Reversed thunder, Christ-side-piercing spear,The six-days world transposing in an hour,A kind of tune, which all things hear and fear;Softness, and peace, and joy, and love, and bliss,Exalted manna, gladness of the best,Heaven in ordinary, man well drest,The milky way, the bird of Paradise,Church-bells beyond the stars heard, the souls blood,The land of spices; something understood.(George Herbert [1593-1633), Prayer [I])

Past Experiences and Present Situation Personal Statement
Past Experiences and Present Situation - Personal Statement Example In almost all the cases the rivals belong to one and the same group and community. Somehow, the individuals having experience of living and interacting with different people and cultural environment are in a position to adjust in every atmosphere; the same is applied to me. Since the nature of my fatherââ¬â¢s job demanded to settle down at different places, I also had to move along with him in various cities of my country. Hence, I sought education from three different cities, during which I came across the people having divergent family and cultural backgrounds. Somehow, my active participation in the curricular activities and unflinching co-operation with the fellow-students during classroom discussions, library consulting, group-participation, giving vent to ideas during examination preparations and others made me a popular student of all the educational institutions I attended during the course of time. Additionally, my keen interest in extra-curricular activities including debates and speeches, sports and games and long-tours and trips also proved me as a flexible and amiable person in the eyes of others. I had been the football player for the last many years at school and college levels and played at different positions in the playground. The sports made me learn patience, endurance, tolerance and respect for others even after winning or losing the game. During the sports, I experienced fluctuation of moods and several other pleasant and unpleasant situations; however, my patience and efficiency always supported me.

Sports and Entertainment Management Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Sports and Entertainment Management - Case Study Example Both companies had huge fixed costs to cover and working in their own capacities was proving insufficient to cover those costs. The decision to merge was brilliant as far as the financial performance is concerned. However, there were a myriad of issues to be dealt in this concern which were not easy to negotiate. Firstly, this was an undeniable fact that the two companies had been in a bitter competition over the past few years. There had been a feeling of animosity and it was not easy to get rid of it. Further, their policies and philosophies revolved around the same competition and their efforts had, so far, been largely oriented towards outdoing one another. Therefore, not only is there a need to merge their philosophies, there is also a need to create new philosophies according to which the amalgamated company was to work. However, the key personnel of both companies is mature enough to keep their eyes on the bigger picture. If the merger was the best solution to satisfy their pr ofit motive, they were prepared to go to the full distance. Secondly, Mark Redmond, the president and CEO of the new organization, has to make some big decisions regarding the staff. Redundant staff from both companies is to let go. At the same time, it is to be made sure that some of the staff, which is too essential to lose, is to be retained. It is natural in a merger that some employees prefer not to continue in the merged organization. It is probably because as soon as the news of a merger starts floating around, employees start a job search with more diligence than they normally do. Some of them even succeed in getting better job offers. There are certain employees that groom within a particular company and come to know about the operations of the company inside out. The element of acclimatization is too important to disregard. Such employees are too valuable to lose because new employees may come at the cost of valuable time. Further, it might take some additional cost to tra in the new employees. The merger in question is facing similar issues. They have to retain and integrate the personnel from the different companies. Integration is, of course, not an easy task either. The staffs had traditionally worked against each other and now they have to be harmonized. In this process, there is a great chance of losing momentum and having inconsistent standards. This in turn could have more adverse affects on the relationships with clients and the employees. Further complications arise when it comes to remunerations. While the remunerations at both companies for the respective staff were almost identical, XM Canada also had provisions for share ownership, options and change of control. This difference in the two companies was probably due to the fact that XM Canada was established as an independent company unlike SIRIUS Canada. This means that the remuneration scenario requires some serious decisions to create such a system in which all employees are remunerate d equally. Therefore, it can be seen that there are a lot of difficult things to manage during mergers. The companies in question belong to the field of radio broadcasting in Canada. They had significant differences in how they did their work. Their individual efforts had proved insufficient in the past and this is the primary reason of this merger. For instance, at XM Canada, the communication system was capable to develop the Canadian content for broadcast. On the other hand, SIRIUS Canada depended partly on Slaight Communications, who were also their investors, and partly on Canadian Broadcast Corporation for Canadian content. Further, XM Canada had developed and maintained its own communication and
