Annual Sports Day Essay
The 16th Dec is the founation day of my school and besides other annual co-curricular events like the magic show, fun fair, annual sports day is the event that students wait for anxiously . This event develops competitiveness, sports man spirit and team work among the students. They are full of joy on this day. As usual an interesting programme was chalked out for the day and printed copies were distributed to the students. The parents were also invited alongwith other digniteries and the chief guest. All the participants of different events were short listed and encouraged to get practice before the event. The physical training instructor was the incharge of the whole show and a full dress rehearsal was carried out a day before to give the final touches to the preparations. A DJ was specially hired to add some musical flavour to the event. An ex-student of the school hosted the event and added excitement to the occasion by her fluent, graceful and spontaneous commentary of the proceedings. The show began exactly at 10 AM after the chief guest has arrived at he stage with big round of applause. Parents had already seated in a separate pavillion and looked excited to see their children partcipating in the sports. At the beginning a boy of 9th class recited few verses of the Holy Quraan which was folowed by Naat to pay homage to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). First of all the atheletes, taking part in diferent events staged a march-past and assembled in front of the main pavillion. A student of 9th class stepped forward and requested the chief guest to formally declare the sports day open with a loud beat of drum and music. To start with, different races were staged among students of junior sectionwhich included the banana race, cycle race, baloon race, and back-ball race. It was great fun watching little kids making funny moves. A wonderful display of physical exercise was exhibited by all the students of school. A photographer was busy in capturing the events. Then it was theà turn of lthe senior section to show their talent in the races like the spoon race, sack race, the three-legged race, the dress-up race, 100 meter race and the 4X100 meter relay race. The famous tug of war won by the 9th class boys who displayed their sheer power and team work to win the contest. Students, teachers and parents shouted and cheered to encourage participants while the DJ added more drama with his musical flashes. The host kept the audience interested and informed by her articulate and fluent commentary. After races children, clad in the karate uniforms, came running in with their hands of their hips to exhibit their skills i the martial arts and self defence. It was followed by a brave display of smashing tiles with their fists and foreheads. Our PTI himself performed a dangerous stunt by breaking a stack of burning tiles with his hand on fire. Every one was dumb founded to see this and gave him a big applause. The girls of senior section performed aerobic exercise with musical rhythm in a graceful style. After that, a boy from 10th class sang a popular song of the famous Junoon band while a grils also sang a sufi folk song and got cheered and applauded by all the audiences. Pre-nursary kids presented and fancy dress show and exhibited as a king & queen, an angel, a soldier, a supreman and few more characters which looked so innocent and cute. At the end the host requested the chief guest to give away prizes to the winners of the different events. To conclude the show the chief guest delivered a brief speech which was followed by ex-principals address who shared her views and experiences and also announced donation for the teaching staff. In the closing speech, the principal thanked all the guests and parents for their valued presence and lauded the students spirit of competition and participation specially to the students who volunteered alongwith teachers in making the whole event a great success.

Sherman Alexie and Fredrick Douglass 50 Essays
Compare and Contrast Education is something so sacred to some people but there are many people that take it for granted as well. ââ¬Å"The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Meâ⬠by Sherman Alexie and ââ¬Å"Learning to Read and Writeâ⬠by Fredrick Douglass, is similar in many ways. Both of these men were so eager to learn when in the meantime so many people that do have the opportunity are so clueless. People are so clueless that there were others, and still are, that wish they were in a position to easily learn. Both of these men were minorities and grew up many years ago where learning was unusual. In their situation it was also forbidden in some ways. Although it was tough for both of them, they both felt compelled to take learning into their own hands. Alexie refused to be like others and Douglass did as well. Both of these men went through an astonishing experience to discover what they did. Not only did they both learn that education is something pleasurable, b ut they learned that it was difficult. Alexie, at three years old, started to teach himself how to read using a Superman comic book. He was quite a prodigy. Native-Americans were stereotypically supposed to fail in the classroom.Although they are different in so many ways, they are also alike in a many ways, Douglass taught himself and Alexie did the same. Although they taught themselves in different ways, they still did. That's what makes them alike. Slaves weren't allowed to read or write and Indians were considered outsiders if they did. Alexie being a Native American and Douglass being a slave, they were both outsiders. Growing up an Indian on a Reservation, not much was expected of Alexie in the knowledge department. ââ¬Å"We were Indian children who were expected to be stupidâ⬠(p. 17). Alexie was different. He had a great mind and wanted to put it to use unlike the other Indians. He loved to learn. Alexie was considered an outsider from the Native Americans because he lo ved to learn. Alexie says, ââ¬Å"I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky. â⬠(p. 17). Even if it made Alexie an outsider or not getting along with his peers, he was still inspired. Even if it did mean he would fight with his classmates he did not give up his passion for reading. In his joy, however, there was also pain. Alexie writes, ââ¬Å"I read with equal parts joy and desperation. I loved those books, but I also knew that love had only one purpose. It was trying to save my lifeâ⬠(p. 18) . Sherman Alexie didn't just want to be considered ââ¬Å"a dumb Indian,â⬠like all the other Native Americans. He wanted to be smart and have a better life for himself. He wasn't going to let the color of his skin or where he was born stop him from excelling in life. Fredrick Douglass was first introduced to reading in writing by his masters mistress. Douglass was an African-American slave. Although his master didn't let his mistress teach Douglass, he didn't give up. He was de dicated and took matters into his own hands this mistress gave up on him.He started learning to write and read. Douglass figured out how to read and write in the most unconventional ways. He traded bread for lessons from schooled poor white boys, and figured out how to write by looking at letters on timber in a ship-yard. Once he had attained those skills, Douglass was met with great desperation. He explains: ââ¬Å"As I read and contemplated the subject (of slavery), behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish. As I writhed under it, I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy. It opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out. In moments of agony, I envied my fellow-slaves for their stupidity â⬠¦ I often found myself regr etting my own existence, and wishing myself dead; and but for the hope of being free, I have no doubt that I should have killed myself, or done something for which I should have been killedâ⬠(p. 132).Through his learning, Douglass soon realized that he was not destined to have the lives of the men he read about in books as he would be a slave for life. He wondered if his education had been a curse rather than a gift, and envied the ignorance of his fellow slaves who did not have to feel the same pain that he did. Both of these men realize that the life they thought the had ahead of them wasn't the outcome. That wasn't what they wanted. These men both hoped for the same thing. Sherman Alexie and Frederick Douglassââ¬â¢s essays both raise the question: In certain situations, is ignorance really bliss?Or is it better to be educated and know the truth, rather than live a life in a vacuum devoid of information or any means of achieving access to the world beyond your immediate c ommunity? This is a question one must learn themselves. Education can be both pleasurable and painful. For Alexie and Douglass both, education opened their eyes to the harsh reality of the world. And yet they contributed greatly to it through their own writings. Whether or not one wishes to keep this world closed, is up to each individual.Only you can decide whether or not to take risk of some pain in acquiring knowledge in order to have the opportunity to contribute to the world. While their circumstances, and even their methods of attaining knowledge were different, both of these men were shining examples of what can happen when you follow your passion to learn, and let nothing stand in your way. Both Sherman Alexie and Frederick Douglassââ¬â¢s essays are inspiring and open-minded to read. It's a realization that many people take education for granted and aren't often reminded the great lengths many people have gone through to learn the things. Some people say that ââ¬Å"ignora nce is bliss. â⬠Trying to find the answer to ââ¬Å"ignorance really blissâ⬠is fascinating. However there are some people who would rather know the truth than to be left in the dark. The Delivery Systems on Day Care Schools
Protecting children from abuse, physically and mentally is a major responsibility for all caregivers of children. This includes parents, teachers and childcare workers. According to research conducted by Spungen, Jensen, Finkelstein and Satinsky, it was estimated that one out of five females and one out of six males would be the victim of sexual abuse before the age of 18. In 1985 it was estimated that over 113,000 children between the ages of six through 18 were sexually assaulted in that year alone (Spungen, et al 1989, p127). Due to the increasing incidence of child sexual abuse, a need arose for prevention and training programs for families and caregivers of children. To fulfill this need, child sexual abuse prevention education programs were established. Research conducted in 1987, indicated that over nine million preschoolers and millions of school aged children were cared for by some type of daycare program. Consequently, daycare providers were in a unique position to provide this prevention program (Spungen, et al 1989, p127.) The first such program was established in Philadelphia at the Federation Day Care Services. The goal of the program was to enhance the knowledge of staff, parents and children and to help children develop skills to protect themselves from sexual abuse. The goal for parents and staff was to help them become sensitive about child safety issues and be prepared to cope with the feelings that the children expressed. This program was developed and coordinated by an interagency committee comprised of administrators, educational supervisors and masters prepared social workers who had expertise and training the area of child sexual abuse (Spungen, et al 1989, p127). In developing this program they used the eight basic steps for problem management (Halley, Kopp, Austin 1998, p 183). 1. Perceiving a need and then defining the problem that must be addressed 2. Stating a purpose to be achieved by addressing the problem. 3. Collecting data related to the situation. 4. Using the data to generate alternative responses, opportunities, or solutions to the problems. 5. Assessing the costs of pursing different solutions and weighing the choices. 8. Evaluating the results and beginning again, drawing on what is learned. To effectively implement this prevention program, each audience was identified to develop a different service delivery system. Staff training and parent workshops were conducted by social workers. Classroom teachers implemented programming for children. The linking policy that was used in these deliveries was that of direct practice with the consumer. According to Halley, Kopp, and Austin ââ¬Å"Human service practitioners make, advance, retard and shape policy all the time during their interactions with consumers and with each other â⬠¦the work of delivering human services is linked to all aspects of social policyâ⬠(Halley, Kopp and Austin, 1998 p100 & 101). The goals for staff were to increase awareness of child sexual abuse, increase their comfort level and improve their ability to teach prevention curriculum. In addition to providing a safe environment for children to express themselves and also be able to identify and react appropriately to disclosures of abuse (Spungen, et al 1989, p128). In the first year, two staff training sessions were held at each branch of the Federation Day Care Services. The first session focused on the identification and assessment of child sexual abuse, the second was on disclosures and reporting procedures. There was minimal discussion of the curriculum yet the staff was expected to follow it strictly. Due to the rigidity of the program, staff was resistant to the workshops and felt the training was unnecessary. The committee paid too little attention to the staff's feeling and attitudes regarding this issue. They also did not focus enough attention on teachers' feedback on the curriculum. As a result, there was low staff enthusiasm and increased staff resistance to the training. By the end of the first year the committee became aware of the staff's resistance to the training approach and felt the need to address their concerns. To respond to these concerns and to meet the staff's needs, the committee used the feedback from teachers and actively involved them in the development of the next year's program (Spungen, et al 1989, p128). In the second year of training three staff sessions were held at each branch to meet the needs of new and previously untrained staff. To decrease staff resistance, theory was included in the training to explain the rationale for the program, while focusing on sensitizing staff to their feelings and reactions to child sexual victimization. The initial session focused on the nature and scope of the problem and its relationship to day care. Participants met in small groups and a discussion followed that focused on myths and facts, behavioral and emotional characteristics of abusive families and victims and stages of normal sexual development. The next two training sessions addressed attitudes toward the topic through small group exercises to help promote comfort with sexual language and included role-playing vignettes which focused on disclosure situations. Discussions followed that focused on the curriculum and a teacher's role in preventing child sexual abuse. To supplement the training, written materials and audio visual aids were used. The training then focused on supporting staff in becoming more comfortable with their role in helping children stay safe. Although the training curriculum focused on prevention education, training for staff primarily dealt with teaching them how to respond appropriately to children's reactions and concerns, including procedures for reporting suspected abuse. (Spungen, et al 1989, p128). At the end of the second year, feedback from the teacher evaluations was positive. According to Spungen, et al, it was difficult to assess the conclusive reasons for this. The satisfaction of the program appeared to be related to the staff's increased comfort with the topic and the program as well as a more effective training and curriculum (Spungen, et al 1989, p129). The goals for parents included an increased awareness and knowledge about child sexual abuse; inform them and share the content about the child personal safety program and to provide parents with the skills and resources to help keep their children safe (Spungen, et al 1989, p128). Parental support of the child personal safety program was a high priority. In the first year of the program two parent workshops were offered at each branch of the Federation Day Care Services. The program focused on the dynamics of child sexual abuse and the risk factors for young children, these workshops were provided to parents at no cost. The turnout for these workshops was very low, one possible reason was that parents were disturbed by the information presented and felt unable to protect their children (Spungen, et al 1989, p129). After the first year, more outreach and public relations efforts were used to reach the parents. The outreach included a brochure, individual letters to all parents inviting them to the workshop posters in each branch of the day care and reminder notices sent to families' two days before the program. Evening sessions were conducted at each branch and childcare and dinner were provided at no cost. (Spungen, et al 1989, p128). In the second year of training, parents were provided an opportunity to preview the curriculum and gave their input on it. They also were provided background information about statistics, myths and facts, behavioral and emotional indicators of victims of abuse and stages of normal sex play. A film and discussion about keeping children safe was also included. Parents who attended felt comfortable in expressing their concerns about the curriculum and sex education for their children. Parents were provided resource materials and in home activities to help alleviate their fears and help them support and reinforce the program's efforts (Spungen, et al 1989, p128). At the end of the second year, despite the outreach only a limited number of parents attended these workshops. The parents that did attend gave positive feedback about the program. Some parents were frightened by the statistics and anxious to learn how they could work with the agency to protect their children. Parents found the in-home activities most helpful in learning how to talk with their children about this topic (Spungen, et al 1989, p129). The goals for children included prevention of child sexual abuse and empowering children to keep themselves safe (Spungen, et al 1989, p128). In the first year of training, due to the sensitive nature of the training program, introductory classroom training was necessary to help children with the basic knowledge of the five senses, parts of the body, family members and feelings. Teachers were provided with resource material. By the second year teachers were encouraged to be creative in their presentations. Expanding on the introductory lessons, the child personal safety program was presented over three weeks. Activities included stories, group discussion, role-plays, games, songs, and art projects. Portions of the program were adapted for use based on the developmental needs of each age group. The program was structured that the most sensitive topics were discussed after the children developed greater awareness and assertiveness skills. Topics covered in the story and discussion format included defining child personal safety; identifying good, bad and confusing touches; learning to handle a bad touch; and telling a trusted adult if a bad or confusing touch occurs. The program for children in preschool and kindergarten classrooms began and ended with puppet shows that were developed and performed by staff. The initial puppet show introduced the puppets and the theme of ââ¬Å"No, Go, Tellâ⬠, a phrase often used in child safety programs to emphasize basic safety skills. The second puppet show involved more audience participation and reinforced the themes of the program. One of the differences between the preschool and the school-age program was that the school-age children participated in program development. They created their own artwork for a ââ¬Å"No, Go, Tellâ⬠poster contest and demonstrated their knowledge by developing role-plays (Spungen, et al 1989, p128 ââ¬â 29). According to teacher evaluations and parental reports, children were excited about the program, but the degree to which they benefited from the program varied depending on the child's age and duration of training. Children who participated in the program for the two-year period seemed to benefit the most from the training and were better able to apply the information. Children in the three to four year-old groups were able to model responses, such as repeating the ââ¬Å"No, Go, Tellâ⬠, words but their understanding was limited. Kindergarten children had a greater ability to understand concepts and had an increased awareness of how to apply the information. They learned the vocabulary and developed basic prevention and assertiveness skills. Children 6 to 12 understood and applied the personal safety concepts that they learned in the program. They benefited from less structured programming because the flexibility reduced the boredom that results from the repetitive curriculum. In addition they needed to feel independent and in control of their learning (Spungen, et al 1989, p130). Outcomes and challenges of the training program This program faced many challenges, among them was the initial resistance of the staff of the daycare to attend training and use the curriculum for training. As the result of feedback by the teachers, the committee made changes to the training approach. This change allowed the teachers to have more input in the training of the curriculum and also gave them more freedom to implement it. These changes met several of the service delivery goals as outlined in ââ¬Å"Delivering Human Servicesâ⬠. These included: collaboration between staff and the committee; managing the transitions to new delivery systems; and integrating by using the feedback from the teachers to help develop the second year of the program (Halley, Kopp, Austin, 1998, p180-81). Although gains were made, further study should be conducted in order strengthen collaborations between the teachers and the committee. The next challenge that they faced was that of involving the parents. (From my experience with working with parents and programming, I understand how difficult it can be to actively involve them in training or workshops.) The committee used outreach techniques to reach the parents in an effort to involve them in the program. The delivery goals that they met included: mobilizing to involve the parents and make them aware of the danger and of the need for the training, and relating to consumers by understanding the parent's concerns regarding the training program. By the second year of the training, because of feedback by parents, modifications were in place that met the goals of the program. These changes also helped the parents learn about the problem of child sexual abuse in a less threatening way and help protect their children (Halley, Kopp, Austin, 1998, p180). Although there were changes to the program and an outreach effort, parents were still resistant to training and only about 225 parents attended the program over the course of two years (Spungen, et al 1989, p129). This component of the training needs to be further explored to find out how to involve parents in workshops and training programs etc. Teachers of pre-school, kindergarten children and older children in the daycare encountered different challenges regarding the delivery of the program. After the initial year of the program, teachers were allowed to be creative in the delivery of the training program. This change enriched and helped empower the students who attended the training. Specific programming was geared to preschool students, kindergarten students and to older students. There was a different approach to each group of students, but the overall goals of the training program were met (Spungen, et al 1989, p128 ââ¬â 30). The next challenge was that of the costs involved in implementing the child personal safety program. According to Spungen, it is very expensive to run a child sexual abuse prevention program at a daycare center. Staff expenses, time constraints and space issues are a factor that could inhibit the training (Spungen, et al 1989, p131). Further exploration of funding sources, community-wide cooperative agreements, such as partnerships with community centers or rape crisis centers may alleviate some of the expenses involved in this training, but further research is necessary.

Case Study of The Deepwater Horizon Disaster Essay
Case Study of The Deepwater Horizon Disaster - Essay Example decision makers have to consider several tensions; for instance, individuals against profits, or short against long term rewards, so as to account for the various decision points of the diverse stakeholders. The management of BP illustrated that the company the development and also safety of the societies in their areas of operation. Safety is achieved through aiming for minimal accidents and harm to individuals, and also minimal environmental damage. Present companies generally explain that they serve the best interests of stakeholders. The companies stress the ââ¬Å"triple bottom lineâ⬠illustrating people, planet and then profits. These companies also emphasize good corporate citizenship in their societies, and ensure sustainability through safeguarding long term assets like environment and employees. But, this desired rhetoric cannot be achieved without the formulation of strategic decisions which reflects corporate social responsibility. Decisions illustrates where company rhetoric is transformed into practical reality, through implementation. Ethical decision making entails less complicated processes. Organizational structures or routines can develop organizational culture that render activities common sense, require less or no decisions. Company decisions are mainly among competing ââ¬Å"goodsâ⬠like short term against long term interests, proven systems against innovation, and reducing different categories of risks. This 2010 case study that analyzes deepwater horizon and Macondo well explosion, illustrates good example of ethical decision making complexities (Liu, 2011). On 20th April, 2010, leaking gas and oil from the Macondo exploratory site reached the overhead deepwater rig, and resulted in an explosion, and eventually the well blowout. The explosion resulted in the death of 11 individuals, the injury of 16 people, and traumatizing experience of 99 survivors. The blowout discharged approximately 5 million oil barrels for more than 87 days. Several

Macroeconomics and Microeconomics - MicroFB Essay
Macroeconomics and Microeconomics - MicroFB - Essay Example For example, when a 20% increase in vehicles results from a 20% increase in investment on manufacturing equipments, then the firm could be experiencing constant returns to scale. Question three Economic profit refers to the difference between total revenue and opportunity cost. For instance, Pesso invests $1,000 to begin a business in a particular year which she earns $1,200 in profits. But if she had not begun the business she could have earned a salary of $4,500. In such a case, the economic loss is $250 (1,200 ââ¬â 1000 ââ¬â 450). Question four Law of diminishing marginal returns states that as new workers continue to increase, the marginal product of any additional worker will at some instant be lower than that of the previous worker. For instance, if a company employs workers to produce its commodities, at some point in time each additional worker will provide lower output than the previous worker, if all other factors remain unchanged. Question five Marginal product of labor refers to the change in output resulting from hiring an additional worker. For example, if a pizza restaurant with three employees makes 100 pizzas in a day and 120 pizzas with four employees, the marginal product of labor is 20 pizzas (120 ââ¬â 100). ... For instance, a firm that has spent $10 million acquiring a machine which is not yet installed has to consider the $10 million sunk because it cannot recover the money. Question eight The principal-agent problem refers to the conflict of interest that occurs when an agent is hired by a principal to conduct specific tasks that are extremely costly but in the best interest of the principal. For example, the problem will occur when a company hires a rating agency to set a credit rating and the agency is objective to give a higher rating than that which is deserved in fear of losing future contracts. Question nine Equilibrium price refers to the market price where demand of a good equals the supply. For example, when a market is able to produce 100 pizzas which exactly equal the demand of the pizzas, the price at which the pizzas are offered is the equilibrium price. Question ten Tragedy of the commons can be defined as the dilemma that arises from the situation in which many individuals , working independently and only consulting own interest, will eventually diminish a shared scarce resource even when it is apparent that the action is not in the long-term benefit of all. For instance, if the activities of a mining company affect a natural spring that is the source of water for local people and animals, the occurrence is a tragedy of the commons. PART THREE Question one Economies and diseconomies of scale refer to two completely opposite models. Economies of scale occur at a point when the quantity produced by a firm offers the firm the low cost advantage and the firm earns the minimum cost advantage. Conversely, diseconomies of scale occur at a point when the firm produces less than the amount of the input costs and the

American Political System - Essay Example The Affordable Care Act is said to help ensure that the citizens are in charge of their health care. The Act highlights a patientââ¬â¢s bill of right that states that every American is flexible, and stable in identifying the needs arising from their health. The Act though ignores the crucial issue of health care cost attainments. It is said to be an affordable act but the American patients have to incur a lot to attaining health insurance and cannot attain any treatment without having paid all premiums. Difficulties experienced in the application of Civil Rights in the South The civil rights Act was developed by Kennedy in 1875. Its main aims were to address the issues of discrimination based on color, sex, race, religion and origin, the application of the voters and their requirements and the freedom to access public facilities, work places and schools. Despite this, the bill was faced by a number of controversies that delayed its immediate applicability. But first, the fact that it did not include a number of vital provisions as stated by some of the civil rights leaders, which included terminating the discrimination experienced in private sectors, providing protection against brutality brought out by the police, and creating a department to enhance justice among all citizens disregard less of position or wealth, the bill failed to be passed. In addition, President Johnson said that the bill created a division and stimulated long-term differences in the political support between the North and South.

Budget Transmittal Letter FY 2013 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Budget Transmittal Letter FY 2013 - Assignment Example The financial constraints over the past five years have allowed us to be more disciplined while still exercising some level of prudence. This is so as we ensure that we do what we have agreed to get done in the interest of serving the community. The Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2013 which is hereby transmitted takes into consideration the fundamental needs and the priorities that will help to improve or maintain the quality of life of the people in the community. The strategies that have been employed in preparing the Fiscal Year 2013 Proposed Budget has taken the approach of reducing departmental expenditures, government reform and new sources of generating revenue to boost shortfall. Each department will receive an amount that is proportional to the expenses that are expected to be incurred. We continue our quest and commitment to sustainability and this has been demonstrated in the time that has been spent examining and assessing priorities relating to the costs and services th at can be reduced. A high level of fiscal discipline on the part of stakeholders is still encouraged as in previous years. The approach that was taken in preparing the Proposed Budget for Fiscal Year 2013 is as follows: i. ... After all the above were accomplished, had the task of recommending the reductions that would facilitate the balancing of the budget in order to ensure its consistency with the overall goals of the City Council. There are still challenges even though we are recovering from the recession. In the previous Fiscal Year we identified structural deficits relating to that period, the current period and Fiscal Year 2014. Structural deficits have now been identified for Fiscal Year 2013 to the tune of $16.4 million. Departments are still encouraged to review their operations to determine where possible any additional cost reductions that might be possible. In taking a strategic approach which we established starting with the Fiscal Year 2012, we have been looking at the solutions that may be possible for the next three to five years. The operating budget is expected to be around $700 million and from this over $20 million is expected to be cut in order for the district to remain fiscally stab le (Puente 2012). See Appendix 1 and 2 for some of the reductions that have been proposed. The increased cost of employee retirements continues to represent a major part of the deficit and uncertainties still abound in respect of the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). The investments are not likely to recover what was expected in the initial period and so pension reforms are likely to continue until a surplus is generated. The returns on pension investments are expected to be about 7.75% and will not be able to cover the costs of pensions fully. There are continuing efforts to get employees to contribute more to their pension costs. There are some groups that have decided to increase their contributions. These include employees in the police department

Mobile Computing And Social Network Research Paper
Mobile Computing And Social Network - Research Paper Example Currently, mobile computing technology has profound impact on health care management. Recently, a number of devices have been developed to work with an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad for the purpose of recording patientââ¬â¢s health information including blood pressure, blood glucose levels, oxygen levels, and heart rate. This paper will discuss the impacts of mobile computing technology in the field of health care management. Mobile computing technology Vs traditional practices It is evident that vital signs are central components of patient care and they mainly include body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, respiratory rate, and other measurements. Today, all these vital signs can be recorded and tracked using mobile computing technology. In the recent past, patients were required to consult a physician or go to a clinical laboratory to check for these vital signs. Under this practice, physicians or sometimes nurses record the patientââ¬â¢s vital sig ns manually and document the signs on a piece of paper or store them in a mobile computer. Once the testing process ended, it would take a fairly long time to record the documented data on electronic charts using computers. As clinical practitioners usually point out, it is very difficult to take vital signs in some cases due to multiple reasons (ââ¬ËVital signs and measurementsââ¬â¢). ... Currently, smart phones and broadband-enabled devices assist patients to monitor their own vital signs frequently and to upload the result to clinical servers of healthcare providers. According to, Fernandes, Afonso, and Simoes (n .d.), chances of errors are relatively less under this method. Digital Technology Has Ruined How People Entertain Themselves Essay
Digital Technology Has Ruined How People Entertain Themselves - Essay Example The digital technology has ruined the film industries in various ways. The traditional films had the ability to show the objects as real through a connection of similarity. Films no longer work as before after the introduction of the digital technology. For example, the camerasââ¬â¢ functions and variables of film stocks are no longer important in determining the final look of films. These changes have also affected the viewers of the films. Examples of the digital technologies affecting filming entail the image enhancement and editing. These technologies have affected the final products because they only focus on the postproduction phase that culminates to an additional reduction of the traces of photographic indexical contingency in the product (Detweiler, 2008). Several aspects in movies or the films are exaggerated since all the cinematographers are using the digital technology. For example, the colors are too deep and the images are not promotional to their natural sizes. Thi s concept is applicable in all the films and movies today. They make the movies appear the same because the cinematographers use the same colors and lighting effects. Consequently, the audiences no longer feel the sense of seeing the actual world when watching the movies (Bodrogi & Khanh, 2012). The cinematographers should know that every movie must have a different look to prevent monotony in the film industries. There were no shortcuts in the traditional filming because cinematographers applied their craft to bring out emotional response in films. Films cannot produce images exactly as the naked eyes can see; however, the pseudo realistic looks are no longer produced and the images look unrealistic when using the digital cameras (ADC, 2009). The film cameras were used in the film industries in the past; however, the digital cameras have substituted the film cameras. According to researchers, the film camera generated better quality images. For instance, the film camera had better resolution compared to the digital ones (Bodrogi & Khanh, 2012). Researches show that the quality of images produced by the 35mm film cameras are many times better than the pictures produced by the best digital cameras (Bodrogi & Khanh, 2012). This may not affect the photographers but it will affect the individuals who want to see the textures of their images in the photographs. The images produced by the film cameras can be rescanned using the modern scanners because they are very clear. Additionally, more details are visible compared to the images produced by the digital cameras. This is because of the high resolution that favors the film cameras. For instance, the past movies such as ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a Wonderful Lifeâ⬠can be rescanned many times with the modern scanners. This is because the analogues cameras that had very high resolution first produced these products (Abrams, 2003). Additionally, the analogue cameras have a higher photo speed compared to the digital camer as. One can experience delays when using the digital cameras because they record information slowly compared to the traditional cameras. An individual can shoot another photo immediately when using the ââ¬Å"SLR film camerasâ⬠because the process only requires the movement of the shutter to complete an exposure to move to another one (Bodrogi & Khanh,

There is a phrase for this recipe. Its called ââ¬Å"Supply and Demand. â⬠Supply and demand results in trade. A case worth examining is how effective trade is between the United States and foreign countries. The article entitled ââ¬Å"US versus China Hidden Export Advantages and Trade Opportunitiesâ⬠is an examination of just how effective trade can be between two countries where supply and demand exists. Gender Equality in Human Resource Management
Gender Equality in Human Resource Management The term Sexual Orientation Equality portrays the equal esteeming of the unique parts expected by men and women. The subject endeavors to vanquish hypothesis pieces and partialities, so both people and females are set up to do likewise getting rewards and contributing towards social, political, social and cash related changes inside society. At whatever go-to individuals and women recognize esteem, the provoke result is a quick and stable change in the economy. The trained and sound women in the general population field are reliable and obliging towards their families and nations (Lorber, 2005) Despite the fact that men and women are disparate physically, it is the financial, political, social and lawful translation of such contracts that eventually prompt to making imbalance among them. In social disparity, men and women commonly have distinctive duties and parts in their day-to-day lives and work. It is foreseen that men appear to do substantially more hazardous and heavier work that is found far from their home. Work done by men seems to have significantly higher status as contrasted and ladies who have the real duty regarding childcare, elderly care, get ready and overseeing sustenance for their families. Gender equality signifies a culture in which men and women have the benefit of the similar opportunities, outcomes, obligations and rights in life. Uniformity amongst ladies and men exist when both genders are fit for sharing commonly in the appropriation of impact and power; have a square with open doors for budgetary flexibility through the arrangement of organizations or work; appreciate equal and simple access to training and the prospects to build up individual claim objectives. Women and men are not made proportional. They each have their God-given qualities, focused on their commitments to multiplication and family common sense. Those qualifications are not easily dismissed. Regardless, those refinements dont bolster sex isolation in general society eye, and in no way, shape or form in the workplace.(Malkin, 2005) Ladies have unequal access to wellbeing administrations and training, confront a biased based impediment at the work environment. Social traditions that drive or empower young women into early childbearing and high school relational unions have hazardous and coordinate results for their wellbeing. There are numerous elevated amounts of severity and viciousness against women nearly in all countries around the globe. This could be among their families where it is managed a regular custom. Violence, in the navigate of furnished conflict, is used to humiliate the foes and to undermine resistance and certainty. The financial imbalance is straightforwardly identified with the money related and budgetary states of women. More than 70% of poor on the planet are women, while the ratio of females living in neediness has fundamentally and lopsidedly expanded as contrasted and men. Ladies likewise have unequal access to vital financial assets like credit, capital, land, and work. Confined open doors for professional success and business are accessible for women. These impediments confine the abilities of women to enhance their budgetary and monetary situation (Zinn, 2005). Ladies have not spoken to properly at all levels of governments necessary leadership in the group, however particularly at national and provincial levels. The legal framework in the greater part of the nations segregates especially against women in the fields of legacy, family law, arrive proprietorship, property, criminal law, and citizenship. The indictment of cases, in the vast majority of the nations, including viciousness against women is troublesome and confused. The discrimination especially against girls and women- including economic discrimination, domestic violence, harmful conventional practices and reproductive inequities- remains the most persistent and pervasive form of inequality. Moreover, women bear further hardship during, as well as, after conflict and different humanitarian emergencies. Women makeup roughly half of the human inhabitants but are comparatively marginalized compared with their male counterparts. (Wilson 2003) The gender equality has been accepted and recognized as human rights principles since the approval of the charter of United Nations in 1945. Most of the global agreements such as the Millennium Development Goals (2000) and the World Conference on Human Rights (1993) have highlighted and stressed on the significant want for all the nations to take appropriate measures against such biased practices. Accomplishing the goal of gender equality requires each woman and men to paintings collectively in sorting and looking for the answers, within the particular approaches that inspire and aid mutual believe and admire. The packages to make certain gender equality need to cope with all styles of violence in opposition to women, which includes trafficking in girls and women, promoting energetic function of girls in peace constructing and struggle eventualities. It must also be ensured that the troubles of gender equality are integrated into infrastructure and governance activities. Sexual orientation uniformity is the first and essential human right. Ladies are similarly qualified for live in opportunity and additionally poise from dread and need. Enabling women is a viable device for lessening neediness and propelling improvement. Enabled women are in a superior position for contributing towards profitability and strength of whole families and additionally groups. They can likewise bolster in enhancing prospects, particularly for the coming era (Kramer, 2004). In spite of numerous assertions at universal level asserting the social privileges of ladies and guaranteeing the reason for sexual orientation fairness, ladies are yet to be more probable, as contrasted and men, to be malnourished, weak and unskilled. They have a low level of access than men to property possession, therapeutic care, work, credit, and preparing. Their potential outcomes for being politically dynamic are not as much as men. Besides, they are much more presented to the abusive behavior at home. The capacity of women for controlling their fruitfulness is altogether central to the strengthening and uniformity of women. At the point when a female is solid, she is gainful. At the point when ladies profitable rights-including the key appropriate to arrange birth timing alongside separating and to settle on basic choices identified with the pressure and generation are ensured and advanced, she has self-sufficiency to partake similarly in the general public. An indispensable a part of supporting the chance of sexual orientation correspondence depends on enabling girls, with a first-rate think about reviewing and recognizing lopsided power characteristics and conjointly giving additional autonomy to delineate their lives. Ladies invigorating is, honestly, essential to wise progression and additionally the understanding of human rights for everybody A prosperous and flourishing society suggests that women and men have parallel open entryways for understanding their human rights. People and females contribute typically towards satisfying the necessities of societal and social movement. The societal and social progress is mainly connected with the political, national and money related change. The men and women must benefit comparable in the general population field from the consequences of that event (Kramer, 2004). In any case, imbalance extremely limits economic advancement, particularly in the creating nations, where a large portion of the ladies are the significant nourishment makers, essential educators, assembles fuel and water, workers and suppliers of human services in the casual economy. Practical advancement in a public is dependent on the equivalent commitments made by men and women. Overall guaranteeing square with support for women in advance of their groups requires two noteworthy components; comparable capacity to contribute and rise to chance to perform such exercises. The status of women in the significant territories of society including training, wellbeing, central leadership and access to assets must be made strides. Planned endeavors ought to be done to guarantee that especially women have an honest to goodness and equal part towards molding the societal development. Decreasing sexual orientation imbalances suggests benefits for women as well as for men, kids and the elderly , and for the poor and also the rich. Human Resource Management speaks to productive and implementable answers for the issues developing from the imbalance amongst men and women. The appropriation of a reasonable HRM show in associations presents level with circumstances, particularly for work force approach as the endorsement of a HRM topic, which connotes creating, and esteeming individuals in quest for objectives and which focuses on the individuals part and the importance of contribution, give chances to contentions about surveying all individuals. The assorted qualities in esteeming individuals empower the advancement of sexual orientation equity to be related with the achievement of business objectives. The speculation that the ascent of HRM is profitable for women and for sexual orientation correspondence requires prompt consideration and activity. This consideration is fundamentally required, as critical disparities exist especially in associations thinking about the advance of women in non-customary regions of work. Albeit critical advance has been made to guarantee sexual orientation correspondence, still a considerable measure of work is to be finished. The HRM hones in an association give workable arrangements. Especially in general society segments of the greater part of the countries, because of its main goal and hostile to prejudicial administration alongside arrangement of open administrations remains a noteworthy issue. The open deliberation is the means by which to make conditions in which men and women can finish their potential. (Wilson, 2003) At the level of associations, practices and arrangements identifying with sexual orientation administration are largely in the circle of human asset administration (HRM). HRM is seen as key within the associations. It notably includes whole body hands together with general directors. It regards people because it is the most immense sole resource of the association. It is merely proactive in its immediate association with individuals; and it with excitement appearance to upgrade the execution of organizations, the social prosperity and representatives desires. A reliable idea of HRM writing is the creation and improvement of responsibility to line administrators with the end goal of overseeing human asset. (Wilson, 2003) Duty regarding the compelling execution of the Gender equity approach rests with the Head of every Department of office, upheld by the senior administration team.(2008). senior line administration, specifically, is portrayed as having the locus of obligation for human asset matters. The line chiefs part is no longer restricted to sorting out and observing the conveyance of administrations, yet is creating in connection with HRM. It includes achieving the HRM arrangement destinations of responsibility, adaptability, quality and in the end the adequacy of subordinates. In the advanced age, HRM chiefs are liable to, and more required in novel practices in direct interchanges, choice, examination, target setting, preparing and improvement and inspiration. (Kramer, 2004)Development of responsibilities to HRM managers may be a primary part of the recent ideas, connected on to diversity and equality management. Rather than concentrating on under-represented teams like females, managing dive rsity is based totally on the theme that folks} ought to be rather valued as individuals for general reasons associated with the interests of business also as for social and ethical reasons. Development of responsibility to HRM managers is stressed once the difficulty is taken into account of United Nations agency is answerable for implementing the method of valuing entire people. This is a grave matter of concern for full employees, particular supervisors as opposed to being seen as an issue identified with just human asset experts. In pursuit of such organizations that offer equality and fairness, that specifically ensures that each man and ladies fulfill their full potential, several problems square measure regression from the event of answerableness to HRM managers, the primary issues HRM manager competency whereas managing individuals effectively. Depleted coaching alongside goodly strains of labor has been in the central highlighted, as characteristics prescribing the amount t o that delegating of Human Resource management is feasible. The deficiency of social control competency and capabilities instead of discrimination or racism can be the first reason for managers incapability to manage, a multiple and honest clusters of individuals. Another issue is whether to evaluate HRM operates on their effectiveness in assuring gender equality. The menstruation can be a primary part of acceptable results and performance goals for accomplishing results. Moreover, equal opportunities goals for HRM managers may even be counter-productive, and per se, they ought to accurately be inspired to line goals for themselves, focusing totally on their social control capability. To ensure equal and non-discriminatory treatment of each man and women continues to be a big challenge confronted by the HRM managers within the organizations. Within the space of managing diversity and HRM, there is a lot of stress on delegated responsibility with line managers forward the various roles. Delegation and devolvement have some strong resonance with the present pragmatic deliberations of the organizations where optimal resources are low and central overheads were particularly subject to scrutiny. (Wilson, 2003) In any case, regressing duty regarding the reason for sexual orientation administration brings up some noteworthy issues. The first is whether this symbolizes a decent opportunity to infix into societies of associations, social control considering, conduct, and estimations of balance and reasonableness while tending to the sex issues that square measure the main goal for a large number of the associations. Second is whether or not or not rather than the removal of a supporter of equality, and so the strain of line managers being primarily in control of gender equality in the pursuit of their HRM duties shows the events for abdication on behalf of individual executives. Devolvement of sexual orientation administration to HRM administrators could display a huge open door for finding direct obligation inside the dispatch of most fit individuals. Administrators may go up against a few difficulties though ensuring sexual orientation uniformity. It incorporates expanding exercises of HRM, clashing needs, their insufficiencies and absence of answerability identifying with equity. It is necessary to look for the ways in which may adequately address the difficulty of gender difference and develop cultures in which gender is ensured. Each individual is liberated to create his/her most contribution. Delegation and delegation of responsibility to HRM managers will play a significant role. However, it is the tremendous potential to represent the last word alternative from gender equality. Supportive, continuous coaching, effective leadership, education for managers, vigilance for structure, communication ways, outcomes, and processes are necessary ingredients t o handle the significant challenges of difference gift between men and women. (Wilson, 2003) The important and empirically based assessment of HRM indicates an important reality concerning the challenges baby-faced by the HRM whereas managing gender equality. These embody management} control, exaggerated police investigation and work intensification, weakening of mutual regulation and shifting of considerable risk to staff. Therefore, HRM guarantees such employment practices, which might develop the well-rewarded, well-trained, comparatively secure, motivated, committed and authorized men, unbiased towards favoritism and racism. The HRM organizations area unit thought-about as high-commitment organizations. Activity and attitudinal commitment area unit applied to support and increase job performance and to see the speed of turnover, justifying entire investments created in exceptionally trained, incredibly talented and high-quality workers. The HRM managers to confront the difficulties of gender difference additionally apply a wide range of personnel plans. These policies are directly joined to the worker involvement like communication, job design, and leadership vogue. (Wilson, 2003) Attention to make sure gender equality reflects a clear research-based cognizance that organizations commitment towards resolution of this matter is influenced by work and job expertise instead of by the gender or by personal options. For instance, high level of equality between the sexes exists in those organizations where job provides ample scope for self-expression and responsibility. Socialization and selection are also observed as important aspects while implementing the solutions to ensure gender equality. An outstanding example of current application is the organizations commitment towards gender equality measured by select inputs such as visible hours and kind of performance. The willingness and capacity to work annualized hours is yet another outstanding example of current application.
Adult Civic Education :: Education Adults Essays
Adult Civic Education Since democracy is the context and the condition for everything else that is valuedââ¬âwork, family life, religion, politics, recreation, and leisureââ¬âpreserving its vitality and integrity must be a central objective of adult education. (Boggs 1991b, p. 54). In a democratic society, adults are frequently confronted with situations and events that require them to make decisions, not only about their own lives as citizens but also about their role as a citizen in a larger community. The answers to dilemmas facing adults in today's world are not clear cut and require the ability to struggle with understanding ideas that are subtle and multifaceted, to engage in serious talk with others, and to take action (Colby et al. 2003; C. Seaquist 2003, p. 11). Since September 11, for example, individuals have had to decide what it means when the "government announces 'specific and credible' clues of a possible terrorist attack" within the United States (L. Seaquist 2003, p. 11). Should they cancel plans for a vacation? Should they stay home and cover their windows with plastic using duct tape? Should they carry on as usual? Furthermore, they also have had to decide if the information itself is credible since being able to interpret intelligence is no w a part of being a citizen (ibid.). How can adult education support adults as they struggle with what it means to be a citizen in an increasingly complex world? This Brief examines the role of adult civic education in contemporary society and provides recommendations for its practice. Adult Civic Education: What Adult civic education, sometimes called adult education for democracy or citizenship education, has a number of purposes and helps individuals carry out both vertical (between the individual and the state) and horizontal (between individuals and groups and communities) aspects of citizenship (Keogh 2003). It involves not only learning about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship (e.g., voting), but also about how one participates in building a society by making informed decisions through dialogue, reflection, and deliberation (Boggs 1991a; Democracy and Peace 1999; Nash 1999). It moves beyond helping learners acquire information and knowledge to fostering the development of action designed to seek solutions to situations (Klaassen 2000). Equipped for the Future, a project of the National Institute for Literacy, for example, organizes content standards for the role of citizen/community member around four broad areas of responsibility as follows: "become and stay informed, form and express opinions and ideas, work together, and take action to strengthen communities" (http://novel.

Treatment of Change and Expansion in Lotos-Eaters and Rip Van Winkle :: Lotos Winkle
Treatment of Change and Expansion in Lotos-Eaters and Rip Van Winkle à à à During the Victorian Era, great accomplishments lead to prosperity for the British Empire. Accomplishments include owning nearly a quarter of the worldââ¬â¢s land and its people. As a result, trade and commerce expanded, and Great Britain reached the height of its power. Furthermore, science rapidly made progress during this time. These rapid strides in economic and technological advances gave the British people a feeling of pessimism about whether they were progressing for the good. As a result, people began to question manââ¬â¢s place, or duty, on earth. Also occurring within the time of the Victorian Era is the American Renaissance. During this period, Americans were expanding their territory according to the belief in Manifest Destiny, or the idea that God or Nature intended for the United States to spread its civilization from coast to coast. Like the British, Americans questioned their moral responsibility concerning change and expansion. Consequently, the concer ns of the people were echoed in the literature written during these time periods. For example, the Victorian poet, Alfred Tennyson, voiced his concerns about constant change and expansion in "The Lotos-Eaters," while the American writer, Washington Irving, also expressed his concerns in "Rip Van Winkle." An examination of the poem, "The Lotos-Eaters," and the short story, "Rip Van Winkle," reveal that Tennyson and Irving romanticized the concept of stasis while also questioning the duty of change and expansion. à In "The Lotos-Eaters," Tennyson romanticizes nature in order to emphasize the virtues of a land that remains in stasis as opposed to a land that is in constant change. When the mariners land on the island, its is described as a "land where all things always seemà ¢d the same" (Tennyson 24). Tennyson is saying that the beauty of the island has been preserved because no one has attempted to change it. Tennyson is also saying that colonization and expansion lead to industry, which strips nature of its beauty. Furthermore, the atmosphere of the island is romanticized in that "there is neither sharp sunlight nor clear moon, only the haze of a seemingly perpetual afternoon; the air itself is languid and the stream, not full and rushing but slender and slow, seems to pause in its fall from the cliff" (Ryals 97). The idea of an island that remains constantly at the most pleasant time of day and a stream that is barely moving romanticizes the idea of being at rest with no worries.

In the Knappââ¬â¢s Stage Model, Mark Knapp describes the progression and development of relationships as a series of ten stages in two phases: the ââ¬Ëcoming togetherââ¬â¢, initiation is followed by the experimenting , intensifying, integrating and bonding stages. In the ââ¬Ëcoming apartââ¬â¢, the differentiating, circumscribing, stagnating, avoiding and terminating stage occurs. The se stages are illustrated in the film Dear John. In the opening scene of Dear John, it was Johnââ¬â¢s and Savannahââ¬â¢s first time meeting, it was attraction at first sight. During the night scene at the beach, they conversed. I would still think itââ¬â¢s the initiating stage because the content of their conversation. They didnââ¬â¢t ask questions with the intention of knowing more of each other apart from that one question, ââ¬Ëââ¬â¢When are you going back? â⬠which was rather casual. That will sum up the initiating stage. In the later scene, John asked for a date and Savannah agreed. That means they have both passed each otherââ¬â¢s test so there is an experimenting stage. By the way, John actually stayed at the Barbeque till the night when he mentioned that his dad cooked dinner. Why else would one blow off his dad if it isnââ¬â¢t because he likes the girl? Therefore, that supports my stand that they were already attracted to each other at the beach. At the dinner scene, they were started talking about something more personal. They were making small talk. The topic of family and Johnââ¬â¢s past came in. These topics usually w ouldnââ¬â¢t be brought up at the initiating stage because theyââ¬â¢re too personal. I would also like to link to another concept with this scene which is relational needs of openness. If you notice, John wasnââ¬â¢t too comfortable with the talk to the point he asked ââ¬Å"why do you want to know so much?â⬠He would fall under the kind that closed off to other people. His answers were all one-liners, straight to the point with no further explanations. In the next scene, when they were walking towards the wooden house, that was another example ofà getting to know each other through talking. This ends off the experimenting stage. They have a fight, but reconcile before Johnââ¬â¢s leave from the army is over. When john returns to the army, he and Savannah begin long distance relationship through handwritten letters. The first letter was very clear that Savannah loves John. Previously, John actually gave Savannah a note in which the content wasnââ¬â¢t disclosed to the audience till the very end of the movie. The note said ââ¬Å"I love youâ⬠which was why Savannah wrote him, that letter was a reply. Those were disclosures of feelings to each other . In that scene, John said ââ¬Å"I made you a promise, didnââ¬â¢t I?â⬠and later, they both agreed to write to each other all the time. She was supposed to wait for him for a year while he was away in Germany. That was a sense of commitment to the relationship. This will summarize the intensifying stage. The fourth stage is integrating. This point is rather straightforward. Itââ¬â¢s the turning point whereby the couple announces to their friends and family that they are a couple. In this case, you could see John being introduced to Savannahââ¬â¢s parents. Couples do not always follow strictly to the model. Steps could be jumped or revisited again. Sadly, there was no fifth stage (Bonding ââ¬â marriage, engagement) for this pair in the movie. Conflicts arise because of different perceptions; it is also illustrated in this movie. There was a fighting scene at the patio and it was because John wanted to extend his tour with the army but Savannah did not want to wait for another two years. So after a long time apart, John and Savannah find themselves drifting apart and resigned to being apart from John, and Savannah sends a ââ¬ËDear Johnââ¬â¢ letter telling him that she has bec ome engaged to someone else. John finally got a letter from Savannah which she initiated a break up. Break ups are due to many possible factors, in their case, changes, poor communication and unrealistic expectations. Changes referred to the huge changes they went through from the two weeks of summer break together to being thousand miles apart. Next, poor communication, I think this might be the least contributing factor. Even though, letters took weeks or months to reach each other, their letters were filled with words. They told each other everything about their lives so it wasnââ¬â¢t a case of drifting apart. Lastly, it is the factor I think contributed the most probably which is an unrealistic expectation. Long distance relationships are hard enough and a person can only take it for so long. The first year was fine but whenà John added two more years onto the pile, it was too hard for Savannah to take. Although Johnââ¬â¢s and Savannahââ¬â¢s falling out they eventually came together as friends, es pecially when Johnââ¬â¢s father is on his death bed, John returns home and connects with his father, something he was not able to do before. John then sells his fatherââ¬â¢s coin collection to fund Savannahââ¬â¢s husbandââ¬â¢s cancer treatment. In the last scene of the film, John sees Savannah on the street and they embrace. The movie may not showcase as much details; however it does show the importance of communication in a relationship. For example, Savannah chooses to write a letter to John to break the news of her engagement, instead of calling him, it shows that it is already a sign od avoiding the issue directly. A handwritten letter is a linear form of communication, as John is not given a chance to reply immediately. If you were in Johnââ¬â¢s position, and you received a similar letter about your partnerââ¬â¢s engagement, would you go back home to fight for what you want, or would you be ââ¬ËJohnââ¬â¢, and just bury yourself with work? Hopefully, now you have a better understanding of the Knappââ¬â¢s model and see how it fits into every relationship!

Plea Bargaining
Plea bargaining is defined as the process of negotiating an agreement among the defendant, the prosecutor, and the court as to an appropriate plea and associated sentence in a given case. The advantage for the defense is that less work is required on their part and they typically receive the same amount of money in return. An advantage for the prosecutor is they get a conviction and can alter the sentence any way they see fit as well as maintain an acceptable conviction rate. The court system heavily relied on the use of pleas to keep the system moving. In cases involving a plea the judge is able to dispose of a case quickly and move on to the next. In terms of jails and prisons plea-bargaining can also reduce the amount of inmate entering the facilities as jail time may have been suspended as a condition of a plea bargain. For a guilty defendant, the advantages to a plea bargain are clear; either reduced charges or a reduced sentence. Sometimes a plea deal can reduce a felony charge to a misdemeanor, but thats only a advantage to the defendant. Many plea deals have resulted in a reduction of sentence for the defendant. One gain in the plea bargain system is the fact that the judge in the case does not have to accept it. The prosecution can only recommend the agreement to the judge, but he cannot guarantee that the judge will follow it. As far as the victim goes, plea bargaining can give them closure to go on with their life and receive the justice they seek. Some states have victims' rights law that require a prosecutor to discuss the terms of any plea deal with the victim of the crime before making the offer to the defendant. In my opinion, plea bargaining is acceptable because it saves the system a great amount of time, money and resources only if it was entered with full knowledge and willingness. Even though the defendant in the end may not get a sentence agreed upon by others, they still have to serve time for their acts of crime. Plea bargaining is simply accepted because itââ¬â¢s a quick alternative.

The Development of American Literature via American Book
The Development of American Literature via American Book Publishing Several influential factors have been important to the development of American authors and the literature produced in the 19th century. One of the more critical factors was the onset of Industrialized American book publishing. Before 1 820, printed media was generally manufactured and sold by way of printers, binders, and book dealers working separately (Gabbler-Hover, Steelmaker). In the years that allowed, American businessmen merged the processes and created successful publishing houses which created a need for the development of American literature. In the early sass, limited resources such as financial stability and viable transportation made publishing In the united States a less than profitable venture. The mid sass, however, generated technology that helped to dramatically increase profitability in the trade.Progressive methods of transportation such as the opening of the Erie Canal (Gabbler-Hover, Steelmaker) , inventions such as ââ¬Å"stereotyping, the Ron press, the application of steam power, mechanical typecasting/ typesetting, and new methods of producing illustrations created a revolution in book productionâ⬠that bred competition for Imported fiction (Encyclopedia Britannica). American publishers routinely and Illegally reproduced copies of British and European text. Rifting from readers who were eager for access to foreign fiction. Copyright laws didn't regulate imported texts; irresistible revenues inspired other companies to begin producing their own editions of popular imported literature. This practice of high profit piracy among American publishers was frustrating to American writers who needed an opportunity to prove their viability (Gabbler-Hover, Steelmaker). British and European authors were established In the American market and (obviously) weren't viewed as a financial risk.American authors were required to absorb the cost of printing and distribution. Innovative authors such as Washington Irving and James Finnier Cooper profited from this practice by arranging to keep a substantial percentage of the revenues. Others such as Henry Headwords Longfellow and Henry Melville purchased their own stereotype plates and rented them to publishers for royalties from printed copies. Authors who were successful In periodical publications now had an opportunity to publish books (Gabbler-Hover, Steelmaker).Changes to copyright laws forced illegal printing to become legitimate in its association with the international publishing industry. As federal regulations were being enforced, American publishers started to seek out original American text appropriate for publication (Ecuadorian). A marketplace that had been somewhat unavailable was now open to domestic writers. The Philadelphia born publishing house of M. Carrey and Sons was one of the first to promote American literature. Their Impressive list Finnier Cooper (The Last of the Musicians). In Boston, Tic king and Fields listed major American authors that included Nathaniel Hawthorne and his novel, The Scarlet Letter which began as a short story. With encouragement from Fields, Hawthorne expanded his story into an instant best-seller. As a promoter for the company's writers, Fields set a new standard for marketing American literature to the public by offering colorful posters (to bookstores) that advertised Ticking and Field's publications and by cleverly planting favorable reviews of the company's latest releases (Gabbler-Hover, Steelmaker).Field's methods of promotions and marketing demonstrated continued growth and interest in American literature. The introduction of the literary agent revolutionized the financial climate for publishers and authors. Because an important element in the agent's value to an author is his capacity to extract better terms than the author would for himself, it is not surprising that publishers have resented the intrusion into personal, and often friendl y relationships between themselves and their authorsâ⬠(Encyclopedia Britannica).Professional representation meant higher royalties and advances for the writer, but it also meant a decrease in profit for the publisher. Although the use of agents wasn't a welcome practice in the publishing industry, representatives pressing for higher aments to writers may have been indirectly responsible for aggressive marketing and promotions that emerged in the early part of the 20th century (Gabbler-Hover, Steelmaker).

Many nations throughout history have savored it and some of them are China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Greece, India, Iran and Turkey. Also, aside from being considered as a run of the mill drink, tea presents supposed health benefits. Some authorities say that drinking tea allegedly helps in preventing cancer. Of course, there are detractors who say that drinking tea can also cause coronary disease. Some even say that the consumption of various forms of tea results in acute liver damage. Review of Related Literature A. Milk Tea in The Philippines In the past year, tea shops are increasing all over the metro, effectively cementing its place as the biggest food/beverage trend of 2011. According to Bianca Consunji and RonnaCapili, Milk Tea is more affordable than cold designer coffee. B. Milk Tea As a Business Originally from Hong Kong, Happy Lemon was brought to the country by a group of Chinese-Filipino businessmen who have been friends since grade school and college: Kelvin Gaisano, Kristine Gaisano, Smart Gilas player/TV host Chris Tiu, Andy See, Wesley Pardilla, and Edward Go. The young entrepreneurs share a common love for milk tea. Since there are only a few restaurants which serve good quality milk tea in the Philippines, they went abroad in search for the best cup of milk tea. Then, Kelvin got an idea.à ââ¬Å"Why donââ¬â¢t we put up a milk tea business?â⬠he suggested. All agreed. But finding the perfect brand to bring to the Philippines was the challenge. Chris Tiu related: ââ¬Å"Filipinos, to some extent, have already been introduced to milk tea, but we want them to develop a deeper appreciation for it by offering quality beverages that boast of unique and delicious flavors, made from the freshest ingredients from around the world.â⬠Kelvin Gaisano added: ââ¬Å"We know there are risks involved. But we also believe that there is an under-served market for milk tea.â⬠In their quest to find the best milk tea, the seven young businessmen went everywhere and tried different milk tea brands. One day, they chanced upon Happy Lemon, a Hong Kong-based milk tea business that has been in the market since 2006. As they waltzed inside the store and started looking at the menu, they knew they had found ââ¬Å"The One.â⬠They agreed to bring the brand home to the Philippines. However, it wasnââ¬â¢t an easy task. Tiu shared that they had to wait long before the franchise was finally granted to them. ââ¬Å"It was a long process of courtship,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"For one, we didnââ¬â¢t know who to contact for the franchising. Two, only one of us, Andy See, knows how to speak straight Mandarin.â⬠They sent letter after letter. They followed up each letter with calls, but they received no reply at all until September 2009 when someone from the Happy Lemon headquarters in Hong Kong informed them that they were open to the idea of establishing Happy Lemon in the Philippines. In November 2010, Happy Lemon opened its door to Filipino milk tea lovers, including those who are curious about the brand. A quick look at the beverage menu is enough to pique oneââ¬â¢s curiosity. Using the good quality tea leaves imported from China which are freshly brewed every day, Happy Lemon has several milk tea variants such as the Lemon Series, recommended for those who feel thirsty; the Rock Salt Cheese, their best-seller; the plain Milk Tea series; Mousse Spin, which is more popular among the younger ones; Cocoa & Coffee, which is more chocolate and coffee based with several toppings; and the exotic Specialty Drinks and Fresh Tea drinks, which are less sugary and specially made for health conscious individuals. For former King Eagle and current television host Chris Tiu, it was a love for bubble tea that led to joining the Gaisano family and their partners in bringing Hong Kongââ¬â¢s Happy Lemon brand to local shores.à ââ¬Å"In Vancouver, Canada, the tea places are really packed. Here, itââ¬â¢s always been about coffee, so we think that thereââ¬â¢s room for Filipinos to learn to appreciate tea,â⬠he shares. ââ¬âââ¬â- Happy Lemon is a Hong Kong-based drink shop brought to the Philippines by a group of friends from Ateneo, who have discovered it during their travels and grown to love it. Happy Lemon has over 100 branches worldwide, with the first local branch having opened at the Promenade in Green hills only last November. Due to its immense popularity, new branches are already being planned for Eastwood and Power plant Mall. But, what makes Happy Lemon different from all the other beverage hubs cropping up lately? Athlete and TV host Chris Tiu, head of Happy Lemonââ¬â¢s Marketing and Business Development, says, ââ¬Å"First of all, everything is fresh. The products, theyââ¬â¢re all made from freshly brewed tea, so the flavor is more distinct. Plus, the products are very unique. The company spends a lot in and research and development, so theyââ¬â¢re really [high] quality. Itââ¬â¢s not like other brands that are mostly powdered lang.â⬠He explained that while most fast drink providers are for to-go orders only, the group wanted Happy Lemon to be more of a homey place with a warm, welcoming ambiance. ââ¬Å"We want to make it a destination where people can go and hang out with their friends,â⬠says Chris. ââ¬Å"Instead of going out on gimmicks at night or drinking alcohol, go here na lang. Wholesome tayo, ââ¬Ëdi ba? Healthy pa!â⬠CJ de los Santos, Cosmo.ph Staff Writer May 23, 2011 ââ¬âââ¬â Occasion Based Marketing is an approach to connect when and why consumers use the product with how they shop for the product. Companies need to realize that their customers are not only different from each other, but are also different from themselves at different times. People have different needs when they are at work and when they are at home or socializing. The results of this study would mean that the consumer durable companies andà retailers are adapting various promotional strategies to attract deal prone, promotion liking customers. Consumers are bombarded with messages pitched through a growing number of channels: broadcast and narrow cast television, radio, on-line computer networks, the internet, telephone services such as fax and telemarketing, and niche magazines and other print media. In developing the product strategy, marketers strive for the right mix of promotional elements to make sure that their product is well received. One of the primary goals of a customer promotion is to entice the customer to take the final step and make a purchase; Advertising creates the interest and excitement that brings the consumer into the store. Marketers then use other tactics in conjunction with advertising programs. In addition to leading to the final decision to buy an item, consumer promotions programs can be highly effective in bringing traffic into a store and generating brand loyalty. (Stanley George June 30, 2012) Many marketers believe that behavioral variables ââ¬â occasions, benefits, user status, usage rate, loyalty status, buyer readiness stage, and attitude- are the best starting points for constructing market segments (Philip Kotler, Keller, Koshy and Jha, 2007). Buyers can be distinguished according to the occasions they develop a need, purchase a product or use a product (Philip Kotler, 2002). Marketing managers and advertising agencies have realized that to make their communication programs effective, they have to rely on sales promotions, public relations, personal selling, and direct marketing, in addition to conventional advertising campaigns. In todayââ¬â¢s markets it is no longer a choice between advertising or promotion; rather, it is a combination of advertising and promotion (Roberto and Roberto, 2005). Research has shown that advertising is most effective when used along with sales promotion, and sales promotions are more effective when communicated well through advertising so as to increase awareness of the promotional offers (Joseph and Sivakumaran, 2008) Statement of the Problem The study intended to determine the Effectiveness of the Promotional Strategies employed by the selected branches of Happy Lemon. Specifically, the study aims to answer the following sub problem. 1. What is the profile of the customers?à 2. What are the reasons for customers patronage in response to the promotional strategies? 3. How do the customers perceive the Effectiveness of the strategies as promotional tool? 4.
